What Are Terpenes?

You may have heard the term “terpenes” while talking about the world of CBD and THC. We are here to explain what terpenes are.

A terpene is any of a large group of volatile unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of plants, especially conifers and citrus trees. They are based on a cyclic molecule having the formula C10H16.

What does that mean? Mostly all plants contain terpenes but naturally we care about the terpenes found in cannabis. While terpenes are known to protect plants from harsh weather and predators, research is being done to see how the similar attributes are effective for humans.  Terpenes are a main ingredient used in natural oils and have been used in traditional medicines for 100s of years.

There are about 400 different terpenes found in cannabis and they are all being researched for their specific uses. So far, it is known that terpenes in cannabis are linked to managing depression and anxiety, alleviating stress, having energizing effects, and so much more. Much like the terpenes protect the plant they’re found in, research shows that they help “protect” humans from many things, as well.

Different terpenes help plants to produce different smells and flavors. The combination of different terpenes together can have different effects when consumed. Research is still being done on the different combinations and their effects but in the meantime, we know that terpenes play an important role in protecting the body’s natural functions.
